Antigen tests are immunoassays that detect the presence of a specific viral antigen - this implies a current viral infection.
An antigen test can thus show whether a person is currently infected with a pathogen such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Once the infection goes away, the antigen goes away. Unlike nucleic acid-based tests that detect the presence of genetic material, antigen tests detect proteins or glycans that are on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Rapid antigen tests are used, among other things, to diagnose pathogens in the respiratory tract - e.g. influenza viruses. They are comparatively inexpensive and can be used directly at the point-of-care location.
In order to minimize the spread of the corona virus, it is now also permitted to use rapid antigen tests to identify SARS-CoV-2. The antigen tests from WIZ Biotech are approved by the EU and WHO and are also listed in the Bfarm.
